How bad behaviour on social media can make you lose a contract or a job

In recent time, organisations who have rejected applicants based on social media conducts are on the increase.

This has been noted to have impacted negatively on the economic and business prospects of many youths, especially in their quest for getting employment or securing a business engagment.

Because many recruiting firms, employers and clients are now scouting social media before employing prospective candidates.

I got my current job through one of them.

According to yougov.com,  one in every five employers interviewed noted that they have rejected a candidate based on the contents or details they got online about the candidate.

In Nigeria, it is now common practice for corporate organisations to do a background search on their prospective employee. One of the less costly means is to use content on your social media profile.

This means companies are giving preference to attitude and conduct over skills set, while shortlisting candidates for a role.

Therefore, never portray yourself as an aggressive or offensive person. This is one of the major things that put employers off the most.

Another important thing to note is your use of English on these platforms. In fact, poor spelling and grammar skills have been identified as more damaging to your reputation than posting a bad picture on your timeline.

Therefore, consider imbibing the culture of  writing simple and correct grammar whenever you are online.

According to Rosemary Haefner, Chief HR officer at CareerBuilder, “It’s important to keep you personal brand appropriate and make sure [what you post is] something you’d feel comfortable with your employer seeing.”

You must note that your social media profile is as a good as your resume, hence ensure it is clean.
