It was a night for Africans at Anfield as Liverpool ended its shaky start in the Champions League after a late 2-1 win over Ajax Amsterdam.

Cameroonian defender Joel Matip was the hero of the night as he scored a late winner to help Liverpool beat the stubborn visitors from the Netherlands.

Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey shook off a knock against Rangers in the first game last week to feature from start to finish but his night was ruined by his African brothers.

Bassey put in a good showing to help Ajax survive the Reds at their famous home ground despite some good chances from the host.

He completed 90% of his passes, made three interceptions, three recoveries, two blocks, won three tackles and made five clearances.

However, the night belonged to Cameroonian star Matip and of course, his Ghanaian counterpart, Mohammed Kudus.

All three goals were scored by Africans, Mohamed Salah, and Kudus, who netted the goal of the tie and match winner for Liverpool, Matip.

Kudus continues impressive form with a stunning goal

The 22-year-old Ghanaian forward is enjoying his football at the moment and making fans of the Black Stars dream ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

With Liverpool leading 1-0 on Tuesday night courtesy of Salah's first goal in five matches, the Ajax midfielder produced a ferocious effort to equalise for the Dutch giant.

Daley Blind sends a ball to Steven Berghuis into the left flank, the midfielder gives a pass over the ground with Steven Bergwijn leaving the ball for Kudus, who hits it hard and shoots beautifully with his magical left foot to draw Ajax level.

The goal was his fifth goal for Ajax in four (4) matches and sixth of the season in nine (9) games.
