Ebuehi has never had a bad game for the Super Eagles since his debut in a friendly game against Argentina in November 2017.
Since his very impressive second 45-minute appearance in that Nigeria’s 4-2 win over Argentina, the right-back has had seven games for the Super Eagles.
In these seven games, the 22-year-old only started only two of them. It's even more fogging that in the few games that he has played for Nigeria, he has shown to be the best full-back.
Shehu Abdullahi posed several questions with his performances during the friendly games ahead of the World Cup and many expected Ebuehi to start ahead of him in Russia. But Rohr stuck with his man and started Shehu in Nigeria’s opening game against Croatia which Nigeria lost 2-0.
With Victor Moses deployed as a wing-back from the right in Super Eagles second game, Francis Uzoho started from the left.
Ebuehi was introduced at the start of the second half and it was a change that sparked Nigeria to their best performance of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The Super Eagles became more threatening from the left and Ebuehi drew defenders to himself creating space for Ahmed Musa to grab a brace.
Ebuehi’s performance against Iceland was a vindication of critics and popular opinion. But in Super Eagles' next game, the crucial tie against Argentina, Rohr dropped him again and left him on the bench all through as Nigeria narrowly lost 1-2 to crash out of the 2018 World Cup.
A source told that the player was very furious at Rohr but who wouldn’t be. He was clearly the best full-back in the squad and yet left the World Cup with just 45 minutes of action.
Before the World Cup, the 22-year-old had sealed a move from Portuguese giants from Dutch side ADO De Haag.
It was a dream move for the young defender whose career was on an obvious rise.
But a cruciate ligament injury has now halted that progress.
Benfica announced on Monday; “The athlete Tyronne suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee and will undergo surgical intervention in the next few days.”
The defender faces up to a year out after his surgery and his promising career will now hinge on how he bounces back from this horrible ordeal.
Get well soon Ebuehi!
