Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey put up another man of the match display in a final, this time to help Rangers win the Scottish Cup.

That makes it back to back impressive displays in finals for the Nigerian after he was named the best player on the pitch in the Europa League final three days prior.

High-level performances like that that tend to attract the attention of top clubs and the 22-year old has been linked with a move away from Rangers this summer.

However, Bassey has now quelled those speculations with his post-game comments after helping Rangers defeat Heart 2-0 after extra time to win the Scottish Cup.

Is Calvin Bassey staying put?

“I just want to keep my head down and keep pushing hard. I’m focused here, I’m here and I’m ready to get ready to come here for pre-season and be fitter than I was last pre-season and ready to see what next season holds for me and the boys,” Bassey said after the game.

His words do not indicate a desire to leave Ibrox Stadium just yet, they in fact suggest that the Nigerian is going to be a rangers player next season.

Breakout star

Bassey joined Rangers as a free agent in the summer of 2020 having previously been with the Leicester City reserves.

The Italy-born defender only managed 15 total appearances in his first season at the club as a raw 21-year old but the potential was clear to see.

The Nigerian international has made a massive leap this season from being a fringe player to now one of the first names on the team sheet for two different managers this season.

The Scottish Cup final was Bassey’s 50th game for Rangers this season across five different competitions which outlines his importance.

His performances have ensured that his days at Rangers are numbered, even if he doesn’t leave this summer, it is only a matter of time.
