Super Eagles' striking sensation Akinkunmi Amoo has been eliminated from the running to become the 2022 CAF Young Player of the Year.

The final five-man shortlist for the Young Player of the Year Award was released on Monday morning with Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri leading the nominees.

Amoo's exclusion from the final shortlist means no Nigerian player or team is in the running for any awards at the 2022 CAF Awards Gala to be held this month.

Tunisian prodigy Mejbri will battle it out with Black Stars of Ghana's Kamaldeen Sulemana, Burkina Faso's Django Ouattara, Senegal's Pape Matar Sarr, and Ivory Coast's Karim Konate for the award.

Four of the final five nominees play in the Top 5 European leagues with Ouattara, Sulemana, and Sarr featuring in the French Ligue 1 for Lorient, Rennes and Metz respectively while Konate plays for RB Salzburg in the Austrian top-flight.

Amoo on the other hand plays for Danish club FC Copenhagen having completed a transfer to the Danish champions from Swedish side Hammarby IF in January 2022.

Amoo scored one (1) goal in two (2) appearances for Copenhagen after his move in January with the hope of gaining more playing time when the season resumes.

The 20-year-old striker was also called up to the Super Eagles camp for the doubleheader World Cup qualifiers against the Black Stars of Ghana and also the latest friendlies and AFCON 2023 qualifiers played by the Super Eagles. He is yet to make his debut for the national team.
