Nigeria and Ghana revive rivalry at WAFU age-grade tournaments

The football rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana is set to be revived at the West African Football Union (WAFU) age-grade tournaments.

The draws for the WAFU under 17 and under 20 men's football competitions were conducted on Friday, April 15, 2022.

In the two divisions Nigeria's age grade team will battle their counterparts from Ghana.

The battle is set to be more intense as the Black Stars of Ghana stopped the Super Eagles of Nigeria from qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with an away goal recorded in the playoff double header.

The rivalry between the two nations has always been tense but the recent situation has now escalated the importance of matches in the future.

The U-17 team known as the Golden Eaglets found out their group opponents at the WAFU Cup as they prepare for the CAN in Algeria later this year.

The Golden Eaglets are in group A along with Togo and Ghana. Group B features Ivory Coast, Benin Republic, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic.

The last time Ghana and Nigeria met at age grade level was at the final of 2019 U-17 AFCON with the Golden Eaglets recording a 3-1 victory.

The WAFU U-17 tournament will be staged in Cape Coast, Ghana from Saturday June 11 to Friday June 24, 2022 .

In the U-20 draws, Nigeria's youth team known as Flying Eagles will also face Ghana.

Group A features Niger Republic, Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 hosts Côte d'Ivoire, Togo and Benin Republic.

The Flying Eagles are in group B along with Ghana and Burkina Faso.

The Amaju Pinnick led Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have announced that the Golden Eaglets will be led by Nduka Ugbade while the Flying Eagles will be led by Ladan Bosso.
