Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has shifted the blame for Saturday's heavy defeat against Brentford to the players and not him.

The new United manager stated that he told the players how to play but they did not play according to his instructions.

Manchester United lost by a heavy 4-0 scoreline away at Brentford on Saturday, the second loss in two games under the new United manager.

In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, Erik ten Hag did not hide his displeasure with the Manchester United players, stating that they (the team) have to take responsibility for their performance against Brentford.

The former Ajax manager stated that he told the Manchester United players to face their opponents with 'belief' but they failed to do that.'

Erik Ten Hag said: “The team has to take the responsibility. I feel sorry for the fans.

“I asked them to play with belief and take responsibility, that is what they didn't do.

We need to convince new signings - Erik ten Hag

The United manager went on to admit that the squad needs an injection of new, quality players and he will try to convince the right profile of players to arrive at Old Trafford.

“New signings? Yes. We need new players and quality players. We will try and convince them to join us," Erik ten Hag said.

“Only when we stick together we will overcome it. The manager is the main responsibility and I take that”

With Saturday's loss at Brentford, the Dutch manager set the unwanted record of being the first Manchester United manager to lose his first two games in the Red Devils dugout since 2002.
