Barcelona Femeni star Asisat Oshoala has been stripped of the Super Falcons captaincy, according to reports. Oshoala has been the team's captain since 2019, following the FIFA Women's World Cup.

The ex-Liverpool Ladies star took over the captain's band after Desire Oparanozie was removed as captain.

Oshoala replaced Oparanozie after the latter called out the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the unfair treatment of the players during the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.

However, three years after taking over as the team's leader, Oshoala has now been removed as the team's captain.

According to reports, the NFF and coach Randy Waldrum agreed to take off the captaincy band from the Barcelona star as it was taking a toll on her.

Oshoala has not played for Nigeria since the Aisha Buhari Cup in September 2021.

The Nigerian was supposed to play for the team in their Africa Women's Cup Of Nations qualifier against Ivory Coast, but she picked up a thigh injury, which eventually ruled her out for the rest of the season.

After picking up the injury, Oshoala took to her Twitter to express her frustration, saying she was tired.

It appears a combination of these factors has now led to her removal as the team's captain.

The NFF is yet to announce the team's new captain, but the honour could go to Onome Ebi, the longest-serving player in the team.

The Super Falcons squad are currently preparing to face Olympic champions Canada in back-to-back friendly games.
