2020 season of Nigeria’s women’s league to kick off on March 18

The league will run in an abridged format with 16 teams drawn in to two groups.

The 2020 Nigeria Women's Premier League (NWPL) season will kick off on Wednesday, March 18 according to the organisers. 

Plans for the new NWPL season were unveiled at the NWPL Congress which was held in Benin on Tuesday, February 18. 

As in abridged format, the 2020 NWPL will have 16 teams drawn in two groups while the table-toppers will battle for in a Super 4 tournament to be played in June. 

Rivers Angels are the reigning champions of the NWPL after they won the title in the Super 4 tournaments played in Lagos in November 2019. 

The NWPL started in 1990 and has been held every year since 1992. Pelican Stars of Calabar have won the title (seven) followed by four won by Rivers Angels, the now-defunct Ufuoma Babe and Delta Queens FC. 

2020 NWPL Groups

Group A: Bayelsa Queens, Pelican Stars, Nasarawa Amazons, Sunshine Stars, Abia Angels, Confluence Queens, Dream Stars, and Edo Queens

Group B: Rivers Angels, Ibom Angels, Royal Queens, Osun Babes, FC Robo Queens, Heartland Queens, Delta Queens and Adamawa Queens FC
