Nigeria's Powerlifting star Bose Omolayo has broken the Powerlifting world record after she emerged winner of the 79kg category at the World Championship.

Omolayo saw off a very stiff competition from Vera Muratova to win gold in the 79kg category at the ongoing world powerlifting championship tagged Tbilisi 2021.

The 32-year-old started off with a lift of 135kg which temporarily saw lead the standing before Muratova displaced her with her lift of 136kg in the second round.

A lift of 139kg in the second round by ensured to returned to the lead before going for the world record in the third round, where she lifted 142kg, coming short of the world record by 1kg.

However, it was in the 'powerlift' that the Nigerian legendary paralympian finally broke the world record with a lift of 144kg to win gold and become the latest world record holder.

Speaking after the win, the visibly estatic Omolayo went spiritual as she praised God for the win and record.

"I feel fine," she stated. "I'm happy, i'm very happy. It wasn't my power, it was God's. It's God who helped me to carry the weights. He helped me to win the gold medal. So, i'm thankful to God,'' she added.

Omolayo's latest win adds to what has been a fruitful year, which saw her also win gold at the Paralympics.

Elsewhere, another powerlifting great, Lucy Ejike, made Nigeria proud after lifting her third world title in Tbilisi 2021.

In an intense final on Wednesday, Ejike battled China's Tan Yujiao in a keenly contested two-way final in the 67kg at the world championship.

Ejike headed into the final leading Yujiao by 1kg, but was put under pressure by the Chinese who lifted 126kg to regain the lead.

However, the Nigerian sealed her world title and another crown for Nigeria when Yujiao failed to clear her final attempt of 129kg due to an unsuccessful chest sequence.

The win was an improvement on the bronze she won at the Tokyo Paralympics earlier this year, alboet in a lower category (61kg) and the legend couldn't contain her joy.

"I feel so great to come back to my normal position, again winning the gold medal”, said Ejike.

Also, Kalifa Almaruf made it another finish on the podium for Nigeria as she picked up bronze in the 73kg category to finish third behind China's Lili Qu and Brasil's Manana D'Andrea.
