On the night of April 30 to May 1, a dramatic event took place in China. A section of a highway in Guangdong province collapsed, killing at least 48 people and injuring many others.

Emergency services managed to reach 30 injured people who were taken to hospital. Although their lives were not at risk, the situation was complicated due to difficult terrain conditions and a large number of vehicles that fell in one place.

A depression created on the road connecting the cities of Meizhou and Dapu became the site of the tragic event. According to state broadcaster CCTV, 19 people were initially killed in the incident. However, the number of victims is constantly increasing and currently stands at 48 people.

CNN reports that there are still vehicles in the sinkhole. Footage from the crash site found on the internet shows that a fire broke out immediately after the accident.

Southern China has been hit by heavy rains in recent weeks. At least four people, including one rescuer, died in floods in Guangdong province, state news agency Xinhua reported. At least 10 people were reported missing.

Could extreme weather conditions have contributed to the road disaster? This is not known yet, but the situation is undoubtedly dramatic and requires further investigation.
