Political economist and 2023 Presidential aspirant, Kingsley Moghalu praises the now impeached deputy governor of Zamfara state, Mahdi Aliyu-Gusau.
In a tweet, on Friday, February 25, 2022, Moghalu said Aliyu-Gusau exhibited "rare courage and principle" in the Nigerian political space.
He explained that Aliyu-Gusau stood ground despite the pressures of the "opportunistic cross-carpeting of the Zamfara State Governor from the PDP to the APC."
Recall, in June 2021, the sitting governor of Zamfara state, Bello Matawalle, officially announced his defection from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC).
However, Aliyu-Guasu declined to join Matawalle and other elected officials in defecting to the APC.
Aliyu-Gusau, who is a son of a former Minister of Defence, Ali Gusau, opposed moving into the APC, arguing that the apex court awarded the electoral victory in 2019 to the PDP and not just its candidates.
The impeached deputy was later accused of having no empathy for the people of Zamfara for holding a political rally on July 10 after killings by bandits in Maradun LGA of the state, and a panel constituting the state's lawmakers was set up to probe the "misconduct."
When summoned to be probed by the panel, Aliyu-Gusau declined the invitation, saying that he is restrained by the pending case which was already being handled by the court.
“While I am willing to and ready to honour the invitation, sadly, I am constrained by pending suit, and it’s attendant order,” the ex-deputy governor stated his response letter sent to the Assembly on July 29, 2021.
On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, the panel summited their report to the Zamfara Assembly, and a total of 20 members present at the sitting of the Assembly all voted in support of the impeachment.
