As outgoing governors are preparing to hand over to their successors on Monday, May 29, 2023, the governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje is not sure about the political party his administration will hand over to.
In March, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Yusuf Abba Kabir, the winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state.
Kabir, who polled 1,019,602 votes defeated the incumbent Deputy Governor of the state, Malam Yusuf Gawuna, of the All Progressive Congress (APC), who scored 892,705 votes.
Although the APC has dragged INEC and the NNPP to court over the declaration of Kabir as the governor-elect, the Kano State Executive Council is preparing for the May 29 inauguration.
To ensure a smooth transition, the council in April set up a 17-member Transition Committee for a handing over of the baton to the incoming administration.
But Ganduje does not know the party his administration had over to come May 29.
While speaking during the commissioning of road projects in the state on Wednesday, May 4, 2023, the governor said only God knows the party that will succeed his administration between his party and the NNPP.
“It’s normal for a government to inherit projects. We inherited some and completed them; and as a government we are leaving some projects for the incoming administration. Only God knows to which government I will transmit power, whether APC or NNPP,” he said.
Ganduje and his predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso played the role of godfathers in the last governorship election in Kano, but the outgoing governor lost the contest to Kwankwaso, his former boss.
