The Ondo State Government has disclosed the cause of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu's demise, revealing that the 67-year-old leader passed away in Germany.
Contrary to previous speculations about a prolonged battle with blood cancer (leukemia), the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, clarified the circumstances surrounding Akeredolu's death in a statement issued today, December 27, 2023.
"Akeredolu answered the eternal call while receiving medical treatment in Germany. He succumbed to complications arising from protracted prostate cancer," stated Ademola-Olateju.
The announcement brings to light the true cause of the governor's passing, dispelling earlier reports of leukemia. The family and the state government have promised to release further details concerning the funeral arrangements.
Governor Akeredolu's health had been a matter of public concern, with his chief press secretary, Richard Olatunde, previously confirming the governor's scheduled medical leave on December 13, 2023.
The statement emphasised Akeredolu's commitment to prioritizing his health for a complete recovery before resuming official duties.
"In the absence of Governor Akeredolu, the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, will assume the responsibilities of the Governor in an acting capacity," Olatunde confirmed.
Governor Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, had a history of delegating power to his deputy during annual vacations, including those on April 1, 2021, April 1, 2022, April 3, 2023, and July 10, 2023.
Earlier in September 2023, Akeredolu returned to office in Nigeria after a three-month medical leave in Germany.
Operating remotely from his home in Ibadan, Oyo State's capital, tensions arose between Akeredolu's supporters and Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa. Attempts to impeach the deputy governor both before and after Akeredolu's departure further heightened political tensions.
During Akeredolu's remote work arrangements, there were allegations of the governor's signature being falsified on official documents. Akeredolu promptly denied these claims.
