A long-haul overnight flight rarely involves a good night's rest. But with a few tricks you can sleep well on deck, too.
If you pay attention to the right clothes, the right seat and a few practical tips during the flight, the trip may not be torture.
Where to sit?
Try to get a window seat. You won't often be disturbed by other travelers in the aisle and people sitting next to you inside.
If you want to sit by the window and sleep, you should "close the blinds after take-off, especially on overnight flights into the morning," advises flight attendant Samantha in the British newspaper Express.
If you want peace and quiet, sit as far back as possible on the plane. Reason: families with small children usually sit in the front. And travelling by plane is very exciting for the youngest.
Where to rest your head?
Sleeping position is important for restful sleep. And finding it on the plane is quite difficult. Of course, a neck pillow helps. If you want to completely avoid (accidentally) hugging the person sitting next to you, simply rest your head on the folded table in front of you.
How not to wake up?
To keep passengers comfortable on long-haul flights, airlines offer blankets and small pillows for the night. But be careful: always wear your seat belts and do not cover them completely. Otherwise, you may be woken up during landing approach or during the threat of potential turbulence.
What to wear?
If you dress for a flight as if you were going to a beach vacation, you may get cold quickly on the plane. This happens because planes are not always well heated. There may be a draft or the air conditioning set too high.
Of course, it may also be too warm to sleep. Therefore, the best solution for a good sleep on a plane is to wear light clothing. Leggings or jogging pants, loose T-shirts, and warm sweatshirts or sweaters that can be easily removed are ideal. And don't forget about socks!

What else helps you fall and stay asleep?
- Sleeping masks help provide the necessary darkness.
- Earplugs or headphones with quiet music or a podcast can block out annoying noise on the plane.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol before a flight.
- Try to adjust to the time zone of your destination.
- Pay attention to your diet before the flight, choose light meals and avoid heavy, fatty foods.
- Mild sleep aids such as melatonin or appropriate herbal teas may also be helpful. Stronger agents should be consulted with a doctor.
