British veterinarians examined 40 breeds of cats from the British Isles. The study shows that Burmese cats have the longest life expectancy at birth, with an average lifespan of 14.4 years.
British scientists have created the first table for the UK cat population receiving veterinary care.
Previously, they analysed data from veterinary clinics, which included over 8,000 domestic cats - quadrupeds that died between January 2019 and March 2021.
Lifespan of cats
As a result, British scientists managed to determine the average life expectancy of individual cat breeds.
It was found that Burmese cats have the longest life expectancy at birth - an average of 14.4 years. Siamese cats come in second place with an average lifespan of 11.7 years. The next longest-living breeds are Persians - 10.9 years, Ragdoll cats - 10.3 years, Norwegian and Maine Coon cats - 10 years, Russian Blue cats - about 9.5 years and Bengal cats - 8.5 years.
Research conducted by the British shows that sphinxes have the shortest lifespan - only 6.7 years. This is most likely due to the genetic predisposition of these animals to heart disease.

Moreover, the study shows that the average life expectancy of cats is increased by crossbreeds, which on average live about 1.5 years longer than purebred cats.
