Finland, a country with a cool climate where the northern lights illuminate winter and the white nights illuminate summer, has been named the happiest country in the world once again, according to the World Happiness Report.
Meanwhile, the United States, which usually ranks in the top 20, dropped to 23rd place. Poland is even lower, but still high, compared to the world and has advanced compared to last year.
The World Happiness Report 2024 , which was created thanks to the cooperation of Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Center and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, is based on global data from surveys conducted among residents of over 140 countries. Countries are ranked in terms of happiness by taking into account average life ratings over the previous three years.
This year, the report also included separate rankings by age group. Surprisingly, life satisfaction among young people in some parts of the world, including North America, has fallen so rapidly that young people there are now less happy than older people. This trend contributed to the United States falling in the rankings.
At the end of the ranking was Afghanistan, considered the least happy country in the world. Lebanon, Lesotho, Sierra Leone and Congo were also at the bottom of the list.
