The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) achieved a significant milestone by reaching its 50th anniversary on May 22, 2023.

This remarkable feat calls for reflection on the programme's accomplishments and the benefits it has brought to Nigerian graduates and the nation as a whole.

As we look back on the journey of NYSC, it is essential to critically examine the areas where redundancy may have hindered progress. Are there aspects that require transformation? How can we breathe new life into the familiar NYSC that has shaped the lives of countless youths?

It is crucial to acknowledge the recurring complaints voiced by corps members throughout the years and evaluate whether the established norms can be enhanced. By addressing these key aspects, we strive to enhance the NYSC experience, empower Nigerian youths, and align the programme with the evolving needs of the nation.

Without further ado, let us delve into the essential areas that warrant attention and transformation within the NYSC framework.

Enhanced safety measures

The safety of corps members should be a paramount concern for the NYSC. Regrettably, security issues have persistently plagued the programme, prompting many corps members to seek redeployment or even opt out of service.

The treacherous roads and lack of assurance regarding their safety in the assigned states are significant factors driving such decisions. Despite being regarded as government assets, these young individuals often find themselves lacking adequate protection.

Disturbingly, cases of corpers being kidnapped, robbed, or even killed are sometimes brushed aside without proper attention or justice. The government and NYSC leadership must take decisive action to strengthen safety protocols and measures, particularly in regions prone to security challenges like the north.

It is imperative that every effort be made to guarantee the security and well-being of these young Nigerians, providing reassurance to their concerned parents. Failing to address these safety concerns would be a grave disservice to the corps members who dedicate their time and energy to national service.

Improved welfare packages

The NYSC must prioritise the provision of essential amenities for corps members, particularly those posted to underserved villages lacking basic facilities such as decent accommodation, electricity, and clean water.

These necessities are fundamental to sustaining life, and it is the responsibility of the NYSC to ensure their availability. Additionally, it is high time that the monthly allowance, currently set at ₦33,000, be substantially increased. These young individuals rely on this stipend to survive in unfamiliar territories, far away from their loved ones. The challenges they encounter in adapting to new environments can be overwhelming, making it crucial for the NYSC to address this concern.

Furthermore, transportation to the assigned states should be factored into the budget. Providing a meagre ₦2,000 as transportation allowance is inadequate, especially considering the country's inflation and rising costs of living.

The NYSC needs to acknowledge these factors and adjust accordingly. By enhancing the welfare packages offered to corps members, including provisions for accommodation, healthcare, and increased financial support, the NYSC can alleviate the numerous challenges faced during their service years. Addressing these long-standing complaints would demonstrate a genuine commitment to the well-being of corps members and enhance their overall experience during the programme.

Community development projects

At the heart of the NYSC programme lies its core purpose of fostering national development and promoting unity. The essence of the NYSC is rooted in equipping Nigerian youths with the spirit of self-reliance, cultivating skills for self-employment, and making meaningful contributions to the nation's growth.

To uphold this vision, it is crucial to prioritise and enhance the promotion of impactful community development projects that not only address the specific needs of local communities and schools but also actively engage and involve them.

These community development projects serve as a tangible embodiment of the NYSC's mission. By actively identifying and addressing the unique challenges faced by communities, corps members can make a lasting impact during their service year to contribute to the overall betterment of society.

It is imperative that these community development initiatives extend beyond the service year. Their impact should be sustainable and capable of leaving a lasting legacy to the communities and schools involved, inspiring future corps members to continue the spirit of service and community development.

By encouraging meaningful and impactful initiatives, the NYSC empowers corps members to make a tangible difference in the communities they serve, ultimately contributing to the socio-economic development of the nation as a whole.

Accountability even after the service year

To enhance the NYSC programme's impact and ensure a continued sense of responsibility among former corps members, it is essential to establish a robust alumni network. This network would serve as a platform for fostering connections, facilitating mentorship opportunities, and promoting knowledge sharing to support the professional growth and development of new corps members.

They can play a vital role in the orientation of new corps members, sharing valuable insights and providing guidance. Moreover, leveraging their expertise, former corps members can be strategically placed in companies where their skills can be maximised, creating pathways for new corps members to enter those organisations.

Additionally, mechanisms should be established to actively engage former corps members in national development efforts. By tapping into their expertise, experiences, and networks, these alumni can contribute significantly to various sectors and initiatives across the country. Their involvement in national development projects would not only enhance the impact of the NYSC programme but also enable these individuals to continue making valuable contributions to the growth and progress of Nigeria.

Collaboration with industries

In order to bridge the gap between academia and the workplace, the NYSC should actively seek partnerships with private sector organisations, industries, and institutions. By fostering collaborations, the programme can create valuable internship opportunities and facilitate the transfer of skills from experienced professionals to corps members.

This collaboration would enhance the practical knowledge and skills of corps members and provide them with a broader range of professional experiences.

Expanding the range of available places of primary assignment (PPAs) beyond government institutions to include private sector organisations, NGOs, research institutions, and startups would greatly benefit corps members.

Such diversification would offer them exposure to different work environments and industries, further equipping them for their future careers. The resulting experiences gained during their service year would not only benefit the individuals themselves but also contribute to the overall progress of the country. By prioritising collaboration with industries, the NYSC can effectively equip Nigerian youth and foster a more prosperous and progressive nation.
