Nothing is more frustrating for a  frequent traveller like jet lag - there you are lying face up in a hotel room at 2am, counting sheep, ceiling tiles and everything else in between. Just awful.

But this could become a thing of the past as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has come up with an app called SkyZen.

So how will this beat the nefarious jetlag?

SkyZen in conjunction with a fitness wristband to monitor passengers' activity and sleeping patterns (or lack of sleep patterns) while in the air, offering tips and a strategy to combat the onset of jet lag.

Users will simply input their flight number, date and class of travel and SkyZen constructs a regimen to follow pre, during and post-flight.

In addition to advising passengers when to sleep, Skyzen uses heath data from the wristband to suggest when and what to eat.

Its aim is to reduce the extent to which the circadian rhythm (responsible for sleeping patterns as well as appetite, body temperature and blood pressure) or our natural 24 hour body clock, is interrupted.

According to IATA's Senior Vice President Tom Windmuller, the group has the expertise needed to create a global cure.

The app is currently available on Apple iTunes store but an android version is not yet available.
