1. Never ever book a hotel online

If you have to do it weeks in advance. Chances are getting to your destination you would find a very cheap hotel. Fancy hotels have big budgets to spend on plenty of advertising coverage. So we assume those are the only options out there. But in reality, there are many cheap, and even free places to sleep when travelling.

2. Try guest houses

A guest house provides a simple, affordable room without the service of a bigger hotel. Kitchens may or may not be included. Breakfast may or may not be included.

In some locations, hostels are just not available. But there will be plenty of cheap guest houses around.

3. Hostels

If you're feeling sociable and want to meet other people, you might consider using hostel facilities.

I once travelled to Osun state and spent the night with my friends at a private hostel for almost N2,000. The average hostel room can hold 4-10 individuals, often furnished with bunk-beds. Personal lockers are also available for securing your belongings. In addition to being cheap, hostels provide a highly social atmosphere for fellow travellers to interact with each other.

4. Try crashing with a friend or friend's friend

The Internet has changed the way we travel. One of the most beneficial developments from that is house sharing. By taking advantage of these new services, any traveller can save money and deepen their experience with convenience and ease.

5. Volunteer or work exchange

Volunteer your time in shelters, ranches, schools and lodges. Work exchanges can teach you a new skill, provide insight into a foreign culture, and benefit a good cause while you travel. Not to mention helping you save money at the same time.
