Temitope Adeboyejo Foundation (TAF), a non-profit organisation dedicated to significantly reducing hypertension in Nigeria, has launched a major initiative with a goal of achieving a 20% reduction in hypertension rates among vulnerable populations over the next five years.
The official launch, held on September 22nd at the Lifepoint Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos, marked a significant milestone in the fight against hypertension in Nigeria. The event featured a keynote address by Dr. Afolashade Oluwole, a leading cardiovascular consultant, titled "Taking Control of Your Pressure: A Holistic Approach to Hypertension Prevention and Management," which underscored the importance of proactive health management and provided valuable information on hypertension prevention and treatment.
In addition to the keynote address, the event featured a moving tribute to the late Mrs. Temitope Adeboyejo, the inspiration behind the foundation. A short film, "Suddenly," was screened, capturing the essence of her life and her courageous battle against hypertension. The film served as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of the disease and the importance of early detection and treatment.
The launch also provided an opportunity to introduce the dedicated individuals who make up TAF's Board of Trustees. These individuals, with their diverse expertise and passion for healthcare, are committed to guiding the foundation's mission and ensuring its success.
To further enhance the evening, the event included captivating musical performances by world-class artiste, Evelle, who performed one of the songs written and performed by Mrs. Temitope Adeboyejo during her lifetime. Additionally, renowned spoken-word artiste Mama Kiki delivered a powerful performance that added a touch of inspiration and emotion. These artistic expressions resonated with the audience, leaving a lasting impression and reinforcing the importance of holistic well-being.
TAF's Executive Director, Oriyomi Abagun, also unveiled the foundation's four major interventions: Beat The Pressure (educating communities), Numbers Matter (promoting early detection), Heart Smart (supporting healthy lifestyles), and TAF Says (advocating for policy changes). These interventions form the foundation of TAF's strategic framework for combating hypertension in Nigeria.
Hypertension is a growing public health crisis in Nigeria, accounting for a large proportion of the country's cardiovascular disease burden and being one of the leading causes of death. TAF aims to tackle this issue by empowering individuals with the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to prevent and manage hypertension, ultimately improving health outcomes and quality of life for countless Nigerians.
“Hypertension is a silent killer," said Mr. Femi Adeboyejo, husband of late Mrs. Temitope Adeboyejo, and founder of The Temitope Adeboyejo Foundation. "We often don’t realise how silent it is until it silences someone close to us. Hence, we are committed to reducing hypertension in Nigeria, one life at a time."
TAF envisions a world free from the devastating impact of hypertension, where everyone has access to the support they need to live long, healthy, and fulfilling lives. The Foundation is focused on creating scalable programs that not only treat but also prevent hypertension across communities in Nigeria.
