Before it was released, nobody knew what was going to end up in “Beautiful Thugger Girls.”

Young Thug had told everyone that the album would contain mostly his ‘singing’, more like what Future did with his critically acclaimed “HNDRXX” project.

For all of the appreciation that he enjoys, Young Thug has never been an A-list artist. Since hitting it big with ‘Stoner’ in 2014, he has steadily grown. But he hasn’t truly had any culture shifting moments.

Other than his monster collaboration ‘Pick up the phone’, and the platinum-selling ‘Best friend’, Young Thug has had numerous near-misses, but has held it down with collaborations. In 2016, he was truly in overdrive, dropping three projects that put his name in the conversations, but didn’t truly crack anything for him.

That’s why “Beautiful Thugger Girls” is important. It is Young Thug taking risks, singing his heart out, and exploring a part of himself that he rarely throws out. Emphasized acoustic guitars make opener ‘Family don’t matter’ look like a new direction is being forged. Country-rap met singing to provide a gimmick that only lasts for one track.

On the singing part, Thug couldn’t help himself. Whether he sings or raps, his vocal texture and cadence share a similarity that makes it difficult to make listeners notice. It’s like the Young Thug that we have always known. Nothing new in that technique.

But the shift here is the lack of subtlety. Young Thug drops everything in favor of his bleeding romantic heart which spews forth romance and love songs. The emotions run high, the focus is maintained, and every record holds its personal distinction that makes it easy for fans to pick favorites.

In the end, everything is positive. Young Thug delivers a good project, that evokes feelings of completeness, happiness, and the desire to spin it a second time.
