The creator of Peaky Blinders confirmed the rumours circulating online: in the upcoming production, the star of the series, Cillian Murphy, winner of an Oscar for his phenomenal performance in Oppenheimer, will return to his iconic role.

Peaky Blinders is one of the loudest and best-rated television productions in recent years. The series, which debuted on the screen in 2013, received excellent reviews from the beginning.

The title received as much as 93% on the opinion-forming website Rotten Tomatoes with positive reviews from critics. The story about the fate of the Shelby gangster family operating at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Birmingham received, among others, four BAFTA awards and four Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA).

The enormous popularity of the six-season series prompted the creator to decide to make a continuation. Last October, Steven Knight announced that a film sequel to Peaky Blinders would be made, set during World War II.

Since then, there has been speculation about the selection of the cast. The showrunner of the series, to the delight of fans, has just announced that the star of the production, Murphy, will return to his iconic role of Tommy Shelby.

"He's definitely coming back," Knight dispelled doubts in an interview with BirminghamWorld.

It is already known that filming will start in September at the Digbeth Loc Studios, located in the English metropolitan county of West Midlands.

This information was met with a very enthusiastic response from recipients. "Wonderful news! This is what we've been waiting for, because it wouldn't be the same without him. This will be the hottest premiere of the coming months," reads one of many similar comments that immediately appeared on the Internet.

Cillian Murphy will return as Thomas Shelby

Murphy recently revealed that whenever he was offered the opportunity to reprise his role as charismatic gangster Tommy, he would accept the offer without hesitation.

"I loved playing him , it was an extraordinary journey. If Knight comes up with a great script - and I'm sure he can because he's a phenomenal writer - I'm on board," said the actor quoted by the Irish Star website.

Murphy is definitely having his time. Less than two weeks ago, the 47-year-old Irishman received the first Oscar in his career for his role as the creator of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer, whom he portrayed in the famous biographical drama, Oppenheimer.

Two new productions with the actor's participation will soon be released in cinemas: the action film, H-Block, in which he stars with Pierce Brosnan and Jamie Dornan, and the comedy-drama, Hippie Hippie Shake directed by Beeban Kidron, the creator of the second part of Bridget Jones's Diary. The film's premiere is scheduled for next year.
