Sindiso Mafico was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, grew up in Eswatini before relocating to Barbados and ultimately settling in the United States.
Her diverse upbringing exposed her to various cultures and social issues, fueling her passion for creating social impact on an international scale.
Mafico's academic journey began with undergraduate studies in sociology, international affairs, and media studies. These fields provided her with the tools to understand and address social challenges. Her passion for social change was evident early on, as she filmed and produced a documentary on police brutality with the Media Institute for Social Change.
Upon graduating from Skidmore College, Mafico pursued a Master’s in Public Administration at NYU Wagner. During her time at NYU, she worked at NYU Africa House, organising seminars and forums with African leaders and policymakers. This role allowed her to contribute to discussions on African development and diaspora issues, further honing her skills in public policy and social impact.
After completing her master’s degree, Mafico served as an adjunct professor for Public Policy at NYU Wagner. In this role, she shared her knowledge and passion with students, teaching them to articulate policy issues and evaluate policy responses. Mafico instilled in her students the importance of informed and effective public service.
Mafico now works as the Lead Associate for Purpose Led Marketing at Save the Children, a leading humanitarian organisation. In this role, she drives fundraising efforts and manages relationships with corporate partners to support humanitarian work globally. Her contributions help finance critical initiatives that improve the lives of vulnerable children.
Mafico's journey has not been without challenges. She recalls the difficulties of unpaid internships and minimum-wage roles. Despite these hurdles, she remained focused on her mission, leveraging each experience to build a career dedicated to social impact and public service.
A significant aspect of Mafico's career is her dedication to empowering women. She works in a female-dominated industry and draws inspiration from the women she meets who are creating change at both community and global levels. Her story serves as a beacon for women aspiring to enter public service and make a difference.
"I hope through learning more about my career journey, other women are inspired to pursue their passions and are reassured that they can realise their dreams," says Mafico.
Her journey is a powerful narrative of resilience, dedication, and the impact one can make through public service.
Looking ahead, Mafico aims to continue her work in social impact, with aspirations of advancing within Save the Children and possibly influencing policy on a larger scale. Her commitment to public service and women's empowerment leaves a lasting legacy, encouraging others to follow in her footsteps and contribute to a more equitable world.
