So, Zainab grabbed the card and read it out. It was about Mr. Tayo informing me about how he had to move to London that Monday morning after his father got the pictures that were sent in from one Chuma, he also talked about how he regretted putting me in that position, and how he wished he had handled things better.

He attached his UK line and asked that I call him when I got home.&nbsp;

After saying goodbyes to my colleagues at work, I got home about two hours later. I took my time to settle in and come to terms with losing my job because of a man. Then, I put a call across to Tayo. The phone rang and after a while, he answered.&nbsp;

“I’m so happy to hear your voice, Enny. Thank you for calling,” he said in a really low tone. “Everything happened so fast and I had to leave the country at that time. I honestly didn't want to put you in this situation, I thought I could handle it,” he said. His voice was so calm, and sober.&nbsp;

I would’ve thought Tayo would stand up to his father for what he wants, but the voice of this human that I’m hearing is the voice of the defeated one. Looks like we lost the battle before the war even started.&nbsp;

“So what happens now, where do we go from here?” I asked. “You said you loved me, so what’s your plan? Is this the end?”&nbsp;

“No, it’s not. I got you a placement in my friend’s company, the HR would call you and you would resume anytime you want,” he explained.&nbsp;

“Well…er, I don’t know Enny, maybe just move on. My father is quite a strict man and we cannot afford another scandal in the company anymore. Our stocks are depleting and there’s so…&nbsp;

“It’s fine. Thank you,” I said.&nbsp;

“Thank you for understanding,” he said, and I ended the call. Disappointed at his response, I buried my head in my sheets and cried.

Two years later, I’m studying in London for my M.Sc, sponsored by my elder brother who decided to help me be better after many heartbreak episodes. Zainab is married to Seun and they are expecting their first child.

Life in London has been cool but, I recently found out that one of my favorite coursemates here, Adeola, is Tayo's new girlfriend.&nbsp;

I found out when she shared their valentine's vacation pictures with me. I don’t know how to feel about this, but Adeola can no longer be my friend. “Why did Mr. Chairman suddenly appear at the office today? It's been years since he stepped foot in this office,” said Zainab. “You think there is something we should be worried about????” I asked Eno, furrowing my brows. “Especially because Mr. Tayo is not in the office yet.&nbsp;

While we were still having the discussion, Deborah walked into the office to inform me that the chairman would like to have a word with me in Mr. Tayo’s office. I and Zainab looked at each other and wondered what could be happening.

Something seemed to be wrong but Zainab asked me to put myself together so that it was nothing.&nbsp;

As I stepped into Mr. Tayo's office, I could feel the tension in the air. Deborah was asked to excuse us, and the Chairman asked me to sit in the chair in front of him, which I did.

He came with two heavily-bodied men and a young lady who looked a little like Mr. Tayo.&nbsp;

After I settled in my seat, I expected someone to speak but everyone was weirdly staring at me. The next word I heard was, “show her the pictures,” and one of the men dropped a picture of me and Mr. Tayo at the restaurant on the table, with another picture of us embracing each other so tightly in front of my house.&nbsp;

“Is this you?” the chairman asked, looking straight into my eyes while pointing his index finger at the picture in front of me.&nbsp;

“Yes sir, that's me,” I responded with my head bowed.&nbsp;

“Do you understand the implication of what you did? Do you know how much of a scandal this is?” he asked. “First it was the woman who was dating the head of your department, I know what it took me to handle that, and now?” I could tell that the Chairman was furious, and there was nothing I could say or do to save myself.

“It's not what you think sir…” I responded.&nbsp;

The chairman stared at me for a while before he made another statement, “today you will get your pay off, and you will no longer work in my company, do you understand?” he asked.&nbsp;

“You can now leave to pack your things,” he dismissed.&nbsp;

The journey from the Chairman’s office to my office seemed so far, as tears filled my eyes. I walked into the office and Zainab, who was ready to welcome me with questions, paused when she saw the state I was in.

After I managed to put myself together, I narrated the situation to her and she patted me on the back that I will be fine.&nbsp;

I was still packing my files together when the lady who looked like Mr. Tayo walked into my office with a stern look. I wondered what she was going to say but she squeezed a card into my hands and said, “Good luck, both of you.”

That Monday morning, the weather was cloudy and breezy.

“Yeah, I’m glad that I broke the rules,” he responded, laughing loudly. I looked up to find Chuma still staring at me as though I owed him answers but I kept on looking away. After a few minutes, we were served our meal and I muttered some prayers of thanksgiving to the lord who did not allow me to starve today.&nbsp;

As I swallowed every mouthful of spaghetti, I caught Chuma giving me a hard stare and it was starting to get very uncomfortable so I excused myself from the table and walked into the bathroom.&nbsp;

Before I closed the door, Chuma appeared in front of me. Why did you do this? Do you think this is smart? You decided to leave me hanging while you hung out with your broke boyfriend who could not afford to buy you a dress?!” asked Chuma, with his raging voice.

“That’s my boss, not my boyfriend,” I explained, trying to avoid issues escalating.&nbsp;

“Oh, you go out with your boss now? He asked, clapping his hands. “Nice!” he said, walking away from me.&nbsp;

I returned to Tayo and found out that Chuma’s seat was empty, an indication that he had left. I heaved a sigh of relief as I sat. This time, I was ready to enjoy the night with Tayo.&nbsp;

Tayo dropped me home that night, and I waved him goodbye, little did I know that more was coming.

I downloaded a food App, ordered jollof rice and beef, and they promised to deliver before 3:30. Then the wait began, I started to stare at the clock until I fell asleep. By the time I woke up, I could feel the terrible pangs of hunger. It was 4:25 pm and they had not delivered my food.

I checked my phone to be sure I hadn’t missed any calls from the dispatch rider but there was no sign of a missed call on my screen. I put a call through to customer care and they informed me that what I ordered was no longer available which explains why I didn’t get my order.

I didn’t know when I started to insult the customer care assistant that answered my call or when she hung up. By the time I decided to end the call, I realized that the call had already ended and I was only talking to myself. “It’s not your fault,” I muttered.&nbsp;

I got up from my bed and began to prepare for the date with Tayo. Of course, I wore the dress I received from Chuma. In a few minutes, I was ready to sweep Tayo off his feet; I looked so ravishing, that any man would beg me to be his wife.

As I sat in the car I ordered, I could hear my tummy make a tumbling sound to remind me that I hadn't eaten anything that day, but I reminded myself that I was going to order a lot when I got to the restaurant.&nbsp;

The distance from my house to the restaurant was a forty-five minutes drive. I paid the driver and walked in, and the first person that I locked eyes with immediately after I walked in was Chuma. “God please let the ground open up and swallow me,” I prayed silently.&nbsp;

I immediately looked away from his direction. I started scanning the room with my eyes to find Tayo, and I found him sitting directly opposite Chuma. “Did Chuma book the same restaurant as Tayo? God abeg, don't allow this guy to put sand-sand in my garri today,” I prayed.

As I started to arrange the pieces of yam in the pot, I realized that my cooking gas started to reduce. The more I increased it, the more it reduced until it suddenly went off. “Wait, my gas has finished?! Ah! Oluwa o!” I thought to myself.&nbsp;

I soberly dragged myself back to my room with my back on the bed. “Or should I go to Beauty’s room and ask her to help me with the cooking? I muttered, unable to make a decision.

“That might be a good idea,” I assured. I stood up and grabbed a shirt to cover my already exposed breasts in my bralette.&nbsp;

I left my apartment, closing the door behind me. In a few minutes, I was in front of Beauty’s flat as she lives directly behind me. I knocked severally but I didn’t get any response; I assumed that Beauty wasn’t around so I returned to my flat.

“I sort of have a strange feeling that you can run into Chuma,” she said.&nbsp;

“No babe, I won’t, when it's not like I’ll be jumping on a bus,” I said.&nbsp;

“If you say so, just be safe,” Ijeoma said.&nbsp;

“I will. Let me free you. I’ll spill all the tea when I get back, okay? Bye,” I said, ending the call.

I kept admiring the dress, turning 360 in front of my mirror. Unable to make a decision yet, I put a call through to Ijeoma to explain the situation. The phone rang for a few seconds before she answered, “the hottest babe in town.”

I ended our call and answered the call from the dispatch rider. From our conversation, he was outside my gate so I stepped out to see him and get my package.&nbsp;

My package looked quite more extensive than expected so I rushed in to open it. The package was mesmerizing but the note attached to it made me shiver.&nbsp;

I immediately unwrapped my package and it was a dinner dress from one of the luxurious female brands in Lagos, it was a shiny white dress, it looked exactly like something I would want. “If you’re reading this, you must have gotten your dress. I saw that you posted it on your Instagram story some months ago that you liked it, so I got it for you. I just got into town a few days ago and I feel like we could meet up for one or two discussions.

She also embraced me in return but whispered something different “whatever is happening between you and Mr. Tayo, save the gist for Monday,” she said. Upon hearing this, I smiled, and she smiled in return as we bade ourselves goodbye.&nbsp;

While I stood amid the crowd, waiting for a bus that was going in my direction, I felt my phone vibrate so I brought out my phone to see a notification on the screen, it was a message from Mr. Tayo, requesting another date during the weekend and my answer was, “Yes. Girls can have fun.”&nbsp;

I got home at 7:00 pm and I started to start to plan what to wear for the date night. Though I am unsure of my love for Mr. Tayo, I am sure that I like him, and I am enjoying the effort and attention that I am getting from him.

As a girl who had never received flower gifts from any man, Mr. Tayo blew my mind. Maybe, I’ve just been carried away by material things, or maybe not. I ransacked my wardrobe all night looking for the perfect dress to wear to the date on Saturday night but none of my outfits were giving me that feeling.

With my clothes all poured on the ground from my wardrobe, I fell asleep in the messy room.&nbsp;

I stood outside the gate of the company but Zainab was still out of sight, I walked a short distance, and stretched my neck to see if I would find Zainab but she was still out of sight.

“Nawa o,'' I sighed. I proceeded to walk further to the bus stop, Deborah caught up with me and said, “anyone who saw the way you rushed downstairs would assume that a fine young man waiting for you in his G-wagon, so all that rush only to trek to the bus-stop?

She asked. I looked around me for a while without acknowledging her presence, then I pretended to see her, “wow! So you’re here?” I asked.&nbsp;

“What are you saying?” she asked rhetorically.&nbsp;

I took a step closer to her and looked into her eyes before responding “I am saying that you do not have the right to talk to me that way.&nbsp;

“What’s going on here?” a familiar voice asked. I turned to find out that it was Zainab who I was hoping to catch up with. “How far now, you don’t need all these,” she taunted, pulling me along with her as we walked towards the bus stop together, leaving Deborah to replay the scenes in her head.&nbsp;

I and Zainab walked quickly until I broke the silence. “Babe, how did it happen?” “It just happened,” she said with a blank expression. “We never intended for it to happen, all I remember was, I started kissing him at the party after we got drunk.

The next thing I remember was,...” a dead silence followed as though she was thinking of something. “All I remember was that we woke up in a hotel room the following morning.”

As we prepared for the close of work; she whispered to my ears, “We had a fling,” and walked away.

The sound of our laughter drew the attention of other staff to our direction, with amusement and questions written all over their faces. I am sure that one of those questions would be, “when did these two settle their quarrel?”

Why are they looking at us like that?” Zainab murmured, but I waved my hands in return,&nbsp;telling her not to mind them, and she continued, “I waited until the end of the party before I walked up to him, and he was so surprised to see me.

He held me by the hands and introduced me to the rest of the groom’s men, telling them that I was the reason he still had a job,” she giggled, “stupid isn’t it?” I nodded.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;“When we started to sip wine, and I got emotional at some point, really emotional that I broke down in tears,” she said, clasping her hands together in a tight fist. “That’s because I was drunk though,” she giggled.&nbsp;

“I just started to tell him about everything that happened and led to my last heartbreak, and in a way, he just had the right words but that was not all.”

“So what happened?” I asked, but it looked like she was holding back some information. I pretended to spy on my watch before I informed her that we had overstayed our break in the pantry.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Oh, wow! abeg let’s leave here before anyone would spread rumors that we only come to work to eat and gossip,” she said, while we both left the pantry giggling and teasing each other.&nbsp;

“Now this is beginning to sound like a Nollywood film,” I teased, sipping a glass of water. She looked at me and we both burst into laughter.

“It's weird,” Zainab said, standing from her seat to conclude the interview. “Thank you very much for coming, we will get back to you on this,” I said, stretching my right arm for a handshake. Reluctantly, she stood from her seat and walked out of the office.&nbsp;

I was set to leave the office when Zainab grabbed me by my right arm, I turned to look at her, “Girl, I messed up, and I’m genuinely sorry about that,” she said, looking sober. I nodded in agreement and told her that I accepted her apology, then she requested that I give her a hug which I willingly did.

Afterward, we decided to have lunch together at the pantry. I had ordered food from a food app, while Zainab brought homemade food. The moment she opened her food flask, the aroma of her vegetable soup filled the room. I giggled and she asked, “what’s amusing?”&nbsp;

“Nothing,” I said. “That’s not true, and we both know,” she said. “I thought we are now cool, no more hiding, no more secrets,” she said.

“No, of course, there are no secrets, I was just wondering if this is one of the things that Seun enjoys the most about being your boyfriend.”

“What?!” She blushed, and cleared her throat before she continued, “I should tell you a little back story on how we met, and how things started between us, right?” she asked, and I nodded in response.

She started by telling me about how they both met at a wedding party outside the office.

“The Groom was Seun’s friend, but I was invited by my neighbor who thought I was suicidal after my last heartbreak and insisted that I went with her to the party.&nbsp;

I was sitting alone in my seat trying to bond with other guests at the party because my neighbor was attending to her invited guests as it was her cousin’s wedding party. When it was time for the couple to dance in the hall, I noticed the first groom's-man whose dance wowed the crowd and commanded so much attention.

Immediately I took out my phone to make a video of him, I noticed that it was someone I knew and that was the beginning of our story.

I burst into laughter, “is that a joke?” I asked. How do you wake up, get dressed, and go through Lagos traffic only to attend an interview that you’re not sure about?

“My name is Cynthia, and I’m highly experienced in the role of this job. I cook different kinds of food, I am very welcoming, and I speak good English,” she explained.

“What did you study in school, and how does it relate to the role you applied for, I mean do you by any chance have any experience in this field?

“Yeah, I’ve cooked for several people, and organizations, but this time, I decided to take it to another level. That's why I am here, she said, confidently smiling at both of us.&nbsp;

The look on Zainab’s face changed, you could tell that she did not sign up for what she got.

“Is this playing?” I thought to myself. How did you wear a fine dress to an interview only to act like you don’t even know the role you are being interviewed for?

A pin drop silence was observed in the room for a few minutes until I spoke up, “Hi Cynthia, can you please remind me of the role that you applied for again?”

“Oh, the role of a Chef,” she said.

“Chef?” Zainab asked. I cleared my throat and continued, “ I think you are probably in the wrong place because we are not recruiting for the role of a chef.”

While I was explaining, she hurriedly dipped her hand into her bag and brought out a small note, and flipped through the pages in seconds before raising her head to speak, “Ah!”

“What happened?” Zainab asked.

“I just found out that I didn’t apply for the role of a Chef here, it’s in another company, please I’m very sorry,” she said adjusting her dress. “Now that I know, please let’s start the interview from the beginning,” she said with the biggest audacity I’ve ever witnessed in my life.

The following day, we were ready to interview our first candidate.

She stares at me for some minutes before she speaks, “well, Mr. Tayo said I should inform you that you and you and your colleague,” she paused to stare at Zainab, “...should invite more candidates for the interview for the role of a front desk officer.

“I’ll do as you have said, but I'd like to see an email with regards to that just for documentation purposes,” I responded. She gave me a daring look and smiled, “are you responding to me like this because of the last time?” she asked.

I paused typing again before responding to her, “Girl, I don’t know if you have never worked in a corporate environment before and I don’t care but if you should know, that’s how it’s done here.” “fine!” she said, banging my table.

&nbsp;A few minutes later, I received an email to that effect from her, and I immediately signaled Zainab that we act on the email immediately. I spent the rest of the day sending emails to prospective candidates whom I thought would be fit for the role, while Zainab did the scouting.&nbsp;

The next time I looked at the wall clock that rested a little above the entrance of our office, it was already time to go home. I shut down my computer, and was packing my bags when Eno walked in. “what is it again this time?” I murmured.

“Enny, na you dey happen o, na you be the happening babe,” she said hugging me, as she whispered in my ears, “so na you be Mr. Tayo babe? Why you no tell us now?” she asked, this time standing in front of me, chewing gum carelessly.&nbsp;

“I don’t know what you are talking about,” I responded. Still packing my bags, she held my left hand and said she would soon find out whatever was going on whether I opened up to her or not. With that, she left, closing the door behind her.&nbsp;

I may not be a prophet, but I’m sure that it's just a matter of time before Eno lands herself in trouble with her mouth.

Deborah walked into our office, towards my direction, and sat in front of my desk. “Yes, how can I help you?”I asked, without shifting my gaze from the computer.

Chaotic life of an HR: Enny, the happening babe (Ep.41)

This time, a piece of slow music wasn't playing in the background, instead, we were jamming to ‘Believe’ by Ric Hassani, a song that I enjoyed. We arrived at the office two hours later than we planned, but we walked in as if nothing happened.

Though our entrance into the office raised some eyebrows, Mr. Tayo had a stern face you would’ve thought we went on a business meeting.&nbsp;

I walked into the office to find Zainab sipping her regular freshly squeezed orange juice. Again, I ignored her and sat right behind my desk, but I couldn't stop stealing glances at her as her desk was a few inches before mine which meant that I could see her from my end unlike her who’d have to turn.&nbsp;

I realized that she started to sip her juice aggressively this time but I pretended to focus on my computer. “Enny, what is going on?” she turned to ask me, but I played dumb. “Fine, I know that we should’ve settled things more amicably but…”&nbsp;

“But what?” I asked calmly, waiting for a response from her but she stuttered instead. “Let me explain, Enny. I understand that we should have handled it better, and I am sorry,” she said.&nbsp;
