MANASSAS PARK, Va. — If Democrats take control of the Virginia state legislature Tuesday, they will hold unified power in this Southern state for the first time in a generation. They will have a chance to enact stricter gun laws, to expand LGBTQ rights, to raise the state’s minimum wage. And they will preside over the next redistricting, which will shape political power in Virginia for a decade.
Bernie Sanders has gone much further than any of the other 2020 Democratic presidential candidates in proposing not just more money for affordable housing, or more enforcement of fair-housing laws, but also fundamental changes in how the housing market functions.
In the short time since Kamala Harris and Joe Biden tangled over the history of busing in the first Democratic primary debate, the question has awkwardly shifted to the present.
(The Upshot): Renters hold little sway in Washington. They vote at lower rates than homeowners. They’re generally represented in Congress <em>by</em> homeowners. They have no deep-pocketed lobbyists. And their problems, if anyone considers them at all, are typically waved off as problems for local government.
