Suspected hoodlums have reportedly kidnapped a lecturer, Stephen Ndifon of the School of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar and two other students of the school.
The don and students were reportedly abducted and taken to an unknown location in the early hours of Tuesday, May 3.
The gunmen, reported by Vanguard to be about seven, invaded Ndifon's house at about 4.00 am in a speed boat from the Obufa Esuk River. They shot repeatedly to scare away neighbours and then abducted the don and students.
A colleague of the lecturer, who gave his name as Emmanuel Jones, said, “They came in from the water which is quite close to the residential quarters and shot sporadically scaring away even our security men before invading Doctor Ndifon’s place to kidnap him and the students staying in his boys’ quarters.”
Vanguard reports that residents regularly contribute money to pay some policemen to keep guard around the quarters but was surprised that the hoodlums did not meet any resistance when they invaded the area.
“We usually contribute money to assist the university security men to keep vigil around the quarters because the place is quite desolate and is frequently invaded by thieves and robbers,” a resident said.
Information Officer of the University, Effiong Eyo said the matter had since been reported to the police and that investigation was in progress.
