A 22-year-old student is presently fighting for his life after he doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire.

Ontario Police say the unnamed student of Treasure Valley Community College (TVCC), Ontario, Canada, set himself ablaze in front of the school's Student Services Center.

He reportedly lit himself with a lighter after dousing himself with petrol.

When the flames engulfed him, he ran into a courtyard fountain to extinguish the flames.

He had however already suffered severe life threatening burns and rescuers took him to a burn centre in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ontario Police Chief, Mark Alexander, said the student had mental health issues and was about to be connected with health services before the incident.

The Police chief said mental health issues are on the rise.

"We're seeing more and more events with mental health issues," he said.

"You see it every day."

TVCC offered counselling services for students after the incident.
