Just when you think you have seen and heard it all, you hear this. Experts are looking for the the DNA of Jesus Christ!

According to Christian Post, the search is being done by Oxford University geneticist, George Busby and biblical scholar, Pastor Joe Basile.

Speaking on the search, Busby, who is also investigating the newly discovered bones of Jesus' cousin, John the Baptist, and other famous holy relics said: "The finding is hugely important, partly because John the Baptist was both a disciple of Jesus and his cousin – meaning they would share DNA.

"For a start, no DNA test can prove that these were bits of John the Baptist, Jesus or any other specific person. We can't extract and analyse an unknown DNA sample and magically say that it belonged to this or that historical character."

The bones, believed to belong to John the Baptist, were found by a Bulgarian archaeologist named Kasimir Popkonstantinov in 2010.

This search will be seen in a new documentary, titled "The Jesus Strand", on The History Channel.

On the channel's website, the motive for the search is explained: "For the first time in history a man of faith and a man of science are teaming up to search for Jesus' DNA."

"By extracting and analyzing samples of each of these holy relics they hope to retrieve a sample of DNA that possibly belongs to Jesus or a member of his family.

"They believe that if they can find a strand of Jesus' DNA it could help identify who among us today are descendants of Jesus and provide us with new insight into the man many consider to be the most important person in history, Jesus."

While some believe the search is simply to prove that Jesus exists, others think the search is being done in order to give scientists the material needed to clone the Son of God.

This search comes after archaeologists have found the burial place of Jesus Christ.

This tomb, a key part of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem's Old City, has been recently restored and unveiled.
