The two year ban on basketball by the Federal President Muhammadu Buhari has been lifted.

The ban by the Federal Government was communicated by Sunday Dare Minister of Youth and Sports Development.

The ban meant that the national teams will have to withdraw from representing the country in international competitions.

However, in a shocking turn of events, the ban was confirmed to be lifted on Wednesday, June 23, 2022.

Basketball ban in Nigeria lifted

The Permanent Secretary of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Ismaila Abubakar said the Federal Government has reversed the Basketball withdrawal of the country from International competitions.  

The latest development by the NBBF comes after World basketball governing body FIBA replaced Nigeria's women's basketball team known as D'Tigress from an international competition.

D'Tigress were in Group B of the World Cup along with Canada, Japan, Serbia, France and Australia.

However they were replaced by Mali with the competition expected to take place Sydney, Australia from September till October.

It is still unclear if FIBA will reinstate Nigeria at the 2022 Women's World Cup after the ban has been lifted.

Engr Musa Kida will be officially sworn is President of the NBBF following the ratification and acceptance of the January election held in Benin City by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
