The Wasps lock, a starter in his country's last 20 Tests, will remain with his club for treatment, having been hampered by ongoing irritation to a nerve in his neck.

England, who welcome New Zealand to Twickenham on Saturday, have called up the uncapped Graham Kitchener of Leicester Tigers as a replacement.

Kitchener captained an England XV against the Barbarians last June.

Head coach Stuart Lancaster told the England Rugby website: "It's obviously disappointing but it's important for Joe, England and Wasps that he has the appropriate rest and recovery period and we are confident that he will be back in the new year."

London Irish hooker David Paice is also set to link up with the England squad next week, as cover for Dylan Hartley and Rob Webber.

Stephen Myler, who has a mild hamstring strain, and Luther Burrell (hand) will remain with Northampton Saints for assessment and treatment of their respective injuries.

Burrelll will not face New Zealand, but Lancaster is hopeful the centre may be able to play some part in England's November programme, which also features matches against South Africa, Samoa and Australia.

"Luther has seen the specialist and, while the news is positive that he could be available later in the series, he will stay with the Saints medical team this week and we will look to bring him into camp further down the line," Lancaster added.
