German Chancellor announces decision to seek fourth term

Angela Merkel has announced her decision to run for the post of German Chancellor for the fourth time.

German Chancellor,

Merkel made this known on Sunday, November 20, 2016 while speaking at the headquarters of her centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

In a report by BBC, the German Chancellor confirmed earlier reports that she would stand again for the position of party leader as well as for chancellor of Germany.

While the general elections are expected to take place in Germany in 2017, BBC reports further showed that Merkel's poll ratings have slipped since the height of her popularity.

Merkel is being challenged by the populist right-wing AfD party.

However, she is reported to have retained a wide support even after suffering an embarrassing regional election defeat in early months of 2016.

The German chancellor has also conceded that her open-door policy towards migrants was a factor in several state elections.
