Nigeria’s 2025 budget has allocated a staggering ₦9.36 billion for the travel and refreshment expenses of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Details from the proposed ₦4.97 trillion appropriation bill, currently at its second reading in the National Assembly, show the presidency’s significant expenditure on trips and meals.
The president’s allocation totals ₦7.44 billion, with ₦6.14 billion earmarked for international travel and ₦873.9 million for local trips. Additionally, ₦431.6 million is reserved for refreshments, meals, and catering supplies.
Vice President Shettima’s budget stands at ₦1.9 billion. Of this, ₦1.31 billion is for international travel, ₦417.5 million for domestic trips, and ₦186.02 million for food and refreshments.
President Tinubu presented the budget to lawmakers on Wednesday, December 18, urging its swift passage to ensure smooth governance.
“This budget reflects our commitment to addressing Nigeria’s priorities,” he stated during the presentation.
The hefty allocation for travel and meals has drawn attention, particularly against the backdrop of Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Critics argue that such expenses may seem excessive, given the country’s pressing financial needs.
Lawmakers are expected to scrutinise the budget in detail before its final approval. Citizens and analysts alike are watching closely to see how the funds will be managed and prioritised.
