Talk about #noexcuses: Illinois Senator
“Just broke my leg rowing—I blame my hardcore pace. Luckily, it no longer hurts to break a leg,” the post is captioned. In the pic, you can see that her prosthetic leg came apart at the knee, and Tammy has a look of surprised glee on her face.
For those of you unfamiliar with the senator, Tammy is an Iraq War Veteran. She’s a Purple Heart recipient, and as her bio page notes, “She was among the first Army women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom.” In 2004, the helicopter she was piloting was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and crashed, and she lost both of her legs. After serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, she was elected as a senator in 2016.
Tammy isn’t the only woman offering up mold-breaking examples of what a fit, healthy women looks like these days. We're also drawing inspiration from women like Jami Marseilles, who became the first bi-lateral amputee woman to complete a full marathon. And then there's Paralympian Melissa Stockwell, who lost her leg in a bombing in Iraq, and went on to become a three-time world parathriathlon champion and bronze medal winner at the 2016 Paralympic Games.
We told you: badass.
