Chrissy Teigen has apologized for a "tone-deaf" tweet about AirPods that evolved into a conversation about wealth and privilege on her timeline. The model and author originally tweeted: "my mom treats her air pods like they're disposable. buys a few a month. she says they would be easier to not lose if they had....a cord."

It quickly picked up traction, accumulating 281,300 likes and 13,900 retweets, and counting. It may have been intended as a joke, but Twitter was definitely not laughing along. Some fans weren't too pleased that Chrissy appeared to be flaunting her disposable income . ( AirPods cost between $159 and $249, so you can do the math.)

Yesterday, Chrissy logged back in and saw that her tweet wasn't as well-received as she'd hoped. "Oh man I havent checked my mentions for a bit and I didnt realize how many people were super pissed off about this," she said in a follow-up. "It was meant as a joke (and exaggeration) about how my mom doesnt realize air pods are with a cord are headphones but it came across as super tone deaf and icky."

Post-apology, Twitter kept the conversation going strong. "It's not just about feelings Chrissy. You sit on top of an absurdly unequal society in which people die from a lack of clean water or access to insulin because your fellow rich people use their power to hoard wealth. Use your own power to change that system," one fan wrote . (To be fair, Chrissy and husband John Legend are vocal supporters of Elizabeth Warren, who has advocated for universal healthcare, per a recent Vanity Fair interview.)
"I promise I will not always say the right thing in the right way but I also promise I hate disappointing or pissing you guys off," Chrissy added . "Im sorry and I will do better to not be such an asshole."
