For allegedly assaulting and raping a 20-year-old woman, a 28-year-old driver, John Godwin, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates' Court sitting in Lagos and could face a life jail term if found guilty.
Godwin who resides at 21, Oluwakemi Street, Ajegunle, who is facing a two-count charge of rape and assault, was said to have beaten the victim when she refused to have sex with him, as well as forcefully having carnal knowledge of her without her consent.
The police prosecutor in the case, Inspector Frank Inah, narrated in court that the accused committed the offences on Saturday, August 8, 2015, at his residence, after inviting the victim over.
“The complainant said that she was at Agbado area of Lagos, when the accused approached her and asked for her telephone number.
The woman said she hesitated at first, but later gave him her number, after which he invited her to his house.
The complainant said when she got to the accused’s apartment, he lured her into his room and forcefully had her carnal knowledge without her consent.”
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and the Magistrate, Mrs M.O Osinbajo, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000, with one surety in like sum, and adjourned the case till September 3, for trial.
