Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun was shown a red card in Saturday's Scottish Premiership league game between Rangers and Motherwell at Fir Park.

Balogun started only his 15th league game of the season following an injury-plagued season, as he played centre-back alongside Connor Goldson as the incumbent champions tried to end the Scottish Premiership regular season on a high.

The Giovanni van Bronckhorst side started the game on a high against the home side, forcing Motherwell's Liam Kelly into an own goal in the 14th minute to give Rangers the lead.

Balogun ends bright performance with red card

In the 28th minute, Balogun was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Motherwell midfielder Dean Cornelius.

Before being given his marching orders, Balogun was having a good game, having won four (4) of his six (6) duels and recording 72.7% of pass accuracy from his 27 touches of the ball.

The Super Eagles defender had also made two (2) interceptions and one (1) tackle in the 28 minutes he had played against fifth-placed Motherwell.

This is Balogun's first red card in the Scottish Premiership this season. The 33-year-old had picked up four (4) yellow cards in the league throughout the season so far.

Calvin Bassey continues to replace Leon Balogun

Van Bronckhorst replaced Balogun with his Nigerian compatriot Calvin Bassey while sacrificing on-loan Manchester United forward Amad Diallo.

Bassey came on for this 27th league game of the season with Saturday the only time he has not started in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers this season.

By continuing to fill in at centre-back for Rangers, Bassey continues to show how versatile he is despite Alan Hutton's warning that the move might hinder the 22-year-old's development in his natural left-back position.

Bassey's five (5) assists this season as a defender and his impressive performances all-around saw him nominated for the 2021/22 Rangers Player of the Year Award alongside Joe Aribo.
