Rohr whose reign as the Head Coach of the team started in 2016 has been axed by Nigeria Football Federation and his departure could be make official later this week.

Rohr managed to qualify the Super Eagles for the next phase of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, but was criticized for the poor performances against Liberia and Cape Verde. .

During his time as Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr was regularly criticized for how he shut out some players out of his squad.

Rohr regularly picked the same core of players in his starting line-up, while other members of the squad were left out in the cold.

We’ve taken a look at seven players that could get a lifeline following Rohr’s imminent departure.

Taiwo Awoniyi :

The Union Berlin striker is one of the best goal poachers in Europe top five league at the moment, but he has mainly been restricted to a cameo appearance in the National team.

Rohr overlooked Awoniyi several times, and later handed him his debut in the defeat to the Central African Republic in October.

However, the striker found himself out of the team for the last International as retired, Odion Ighalo, was handed a recall.

Cyriel Dessers :

Dessers is enjoying a good campaign with Dutch Eredivisie side Feyenoord. The forward has scored nine goals this season, but struggled to get a look in from Gernot Rohr.

His sole appearance under the Franco-German tactician, came in a friendly match against Tunisia back in 2020 and hasn’t received a call-up since then.

Dessers who is still eligible to represent Belgium, will be hoping to get his international career back on track as soon as the new manager is named.

Emmanuel Dennis :

The Watford man is another excellent footballer who has been neglected by Gernot Rohr.

The 24-year-old found opportunities in the national team difficult to come by, despite his rich run of form in the Premier League this season.

After making his debut on 10 September 2019 in a 2–2 friendly draw to Ukraine, the former Club Brugge forward only made two cameo appearances for the team.

Dennis has been involved in four goals and five assists for the Hornets, but it's not enough to change Gernot Rohr's mind.

4 : Akinkunmi Amoo :

According to stats, he's the most creative Nigerian player in Europe this season, but Gernot Rohr still does not think he's ready for the Super Eagles.

Amoo is one of the brains behind Hammarby's incredible form in the Swedish Allsvenskan this season, and the Miloš Milojevic's side won't be where they are without his creativity from the middle of the park.

Rohr has rotated Joe Aribo and Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho in the no.10 role, but none of them delivered the good and Amoo could get his chance under the new coach.

Chidozie Awaziem :

The former FC Porto and Nantes defender is arguably Super Eagles' best central defender at the moment, but he has struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting, despite Ekong’s poor form and Leon's injury problems.

It's gearing that Rohr's preferred ‘Oyinbo wall’ is no long reliable, but instead of replacing them, he switched and used Awaziem as the pillar to keep them standing.

Awaziem produced a brilliant performance in the matches he played and will be hoping for a fresh start under the new coach.
