Police capture most wanted drug lord

49-year-old Servando Gomez aka ‘La Tuta’, was arrested on Friday, February 27, in Morelia, Michoaca.

The police in Mexico have captured the country’s most wanted drug lord.

49-year-old Servando Gomez aka ‘La Tuta’, was arrested on Friday, February 27, in Morelia, Michoaca.

The former primary school teacher was the head of notorious gang, the Knights Templar, and is accused of murder, drug and arms trafficking, extortion and kidnapping.

Mexican authorities had announced a reward of 30 million pesos ($2 million) for anyone who helped capture the drug lord.

President Enrique Peña Nieto congratulated security forces for capturing Gomez, who he described as "a criminal who was so wanted and who had generated an atmosphere of uncertainty and immense criminality."

Gomez is also wanted by the United States for trafficking methamphetamine and cocaine.
