You’ve Got to See This Woman’s Epic Defense of Her $130 Engagement Ring

“It isn’t the ring that matters, it’s the love that goes into buying one.”

Engagement rings have long been hailed as a status symbol—the bigger, the better. But when one bride was shamed for choosing an inexpensive ring, she took to Facebook to defend her choice, and her story has since gone viral.

It all started when Ariel McRae and her now-husband opted for a $130 set of sterling silver and cubic zirconia rings from Pandora to celebrate their engagement. In her post, McRae writes that while they were shopping, one of the sales clerks said, "Can you believe that some men get these as engagement rings? How pathetic."

“When she said that I watched my now husband's face fall,” McRae wrote. “He already felt like a failure, asking me again and again ‘Are you sure you'll be happy with these? Are you sure this is okay?’ He was so upset at the idea of not making me happy enough and of me not wanting to marry him because my rings didn't cost enough money or weren't flashy enough.”

The 22-year-old student went on to explain that her focus was on marrying her best friend, not on the ring, saying she's "happier than I could ever imagine." After all, as she told the clerk, "It isn't the ring that matters, it is the love that goes into buying one."

Apparently, the internet agrees. Since sharing her story, McRae’s post has recieved over a quarter of a million likes and 71,000 shares. Now that’s what we call a fairytale ending.
