Although the rules for dressing have relaxed a little but if you aren't a fashionista or  you are worried what you wear may cause a stir then we recommended you reflect on these rules before you reflect on what to wear.

  • Never outshine the bride. Dazzling sparkles and sequences will always will outshine the bride particularly on a sunny day!. Avoid head to toe sequence or crotch revealing skirts, and remember it's a wedding not the Oscar's or an award ceremony!! unless of course Nollywood glam is the theme.
  • It's also considered inappropriate to dress head to toe in black to weddings, although with more people wearing brights to funerals , black is more acceptable. If you only have black in your cupboard then accessorize with colour - hair accessories, hats for daytime weddings, jewellery, shoes, even a super neon clutch.
  • No oversized hand bags, a clutch is best.
  • If you did not pay for an aso-ebi, find a colour closer to it so you wont look too different.
  • Consider the grounds. What will you be walking and standing on on the day of the wedding; marble, polished concrete, floorboards, carpet, soft lawn, sand? If you are on lawn all day opt for a wedge heel, super high stilettos will sink, and remember walking on marble and polished concrete can be like walking on ice so make sure your shoes are scored with a knife or scuffed with sandpaper prior to wearing them. If it's a stand up cocktail party consider some comfy inner soles such as Party Feet!
  • At morning or lunchtime weddings, pull out your Melbourne Cup hat or any other kind of headpiece that will sit well with your attire.
  • For evening weddings consider wearing glamorous hair pieces and hair jewellery.
  • Dress Code Casual, this NEVER means you can wear jeans....even if they are the most expensive item of clothing you own. A smart suit without a tie or casual chino pant with a casual shirt is best.
  • Get an idea of what colours the bridesmaid dresses will be. This way you can avoid that shade and end up looking like a back up bridesmaid. If you are having difficulty extracting the finer details look for colour clues in the wedding invitation or pre-wedding party invitations
