Speaking to PEOPLE, Philip Taylor of auction house Gorringes says "It's fruit cake and preserved in brandy. It's edible – if you want to!, it was a remarkable thing, and the Duke of Edinburgh made the first cut with his ceremonial sword."

According to reports, one of the tiers was believed to be sent back to Australia in gratitude for them supplying the fruit ingredients, and the very top tier was retained for the 1948 christening of Prince Charles.
