Pictures have emerged of a heavily pregnant Nigerian woman who was saved by the Italian Coast Guard shortly before giving birth.

A heavily pregnant Nigerian woman pulled to safety from a sinking migrant boat along with 104 other migrants, seconds after she gave birth on board the coast guard ship that rescued her.

The young woman gave birth on board a coast guard vessel that was heading back to the southern Italian island of Lampedusa.

She had been picked up along with a group of over 100 migrants and surprised everyone by delivering her child on board the rescue boat.

In the clip, the new mother is seen being aided by coast guards as they help her step off the boat.

One of the men is carrying her baby wrapped in blue blankets.

Both mother and child have been transferred to hospital and are doing well.

Video shows buoyancy aids being thrown to the migrants as they bob in the water.

A coast guard frogman is seen jumping into the water to lead the migrants to the safety of a nearby boat.

Ninety one migrants were rescued from the deflating dinghy, and one body was found.

Several people are believed to be missing following the incident as the migrants on board said 115 people were on the boat when they left Libya.
