Speaking at the ministerial briefing in Ikeja, the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Dayo Mobereola, said 683 accidents have been recorded.
According to him, the state government has also recorded 59 deaths between May 2015 and April 2016.
"We track crashes and investigate them so that we can mitigate and prevent future recurrence.
We note the decline in fatalities which is as a result of increased enforcement; public advocacy and improvement in road infrastructure,” he said.
The commissioner said 1215 passengers were involved in these 683 accidents, adding that 153 were seriously injured, while 464 sustained minor ones.
Mobereola blamed these accidents on failure to obey traffic regulations, adding that drivers need to visit the state's Drivers' Institute for retraining regularly.
"All professional drivers must be retrained on yearly basis. No fewer than 65, 932 drivers are currently undergoing training in the state, '' he said.
