Use of speed limiting devices begins today!

The Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) has initiated the use of speed limiting devices.

As a preventive measure against road traffic crashes, the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) is commencing full enforcement of the compulsory use of speed limiting devices nationwide.

Prior to this, the FRSC had already released official maximum speed limits in a bid to prevent speed related crashes.

Originally set to begin on June 1st 2015, this aims to address the traffic crashes as a result of speeding across the country.

Today, the first phase of speed limit device will be enforced on commercial motorists, then gradually move on to others.

Boboye Oyeyemi, the corps marshal of the FRSC, has repeatedly stressed the importance of this exercise on cars used on Nigerian roads.

In 2014, he identified speed as the cause of over 50 per cent of major road crashes saying, “we do not have vested interest on anyone but on safety on our highways.”

The Federal Road Safety Corps is embarking on this with the support of the Standard Organization of Nigeria(SON) and National Automotive Council of Nigeria.

Hopefully, this scheme will be just as successful as the seatbelt campaign, which succeeded because time was taken to embark on nationwide awareness.
