Microsoft opens up cross-platform multiplayer with PlayStation 4

This means that the Call of Duty or FIFA game could have a multiplayer mode that works with both Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

Microsoft led the multiplayer network setup with Xbox Live (the PlayStation Network only came with the PlayStation 3), but it is now lagging behind the PlayStation 4 with its Xbox One.

This means that there are now more players on competing platforms, and Microsoft is now the underdog.

By opening up its platform, Microsoft can convince late adopters to get an Xbox One even if their friends have a PS4.

For PC gamers, the games that will use Microsoft's now open cross-platform multiplayer mode will also support other operating systems such as Apple's OS X.
