On the 30th of January, 2016, TechCabal, hosted the second edition of AfricaBeta, in partnership with Access Bank and Pay With Capture. Africabeta 2.0, tagged “Fixing online payments in Nigeria” was an interactive discussion about why online payments remain a challenge for Nigerian developers and merchants in 2015 as well as the proposed means to fixing the problems.

The event was comprised of a merchant session, an expert session, Q&A, a product demo by Pay With Capture, as well as drinks and networking. The merchant session saw the leaders of internet ventures, Oluyomi Ojo, Founder/CEO of Printivo; Honey Ogundeyi, Founder/CEO of Fashpa; Emeka Mordi, COO of Spinlet; and Chinedu Azodoh CEO of Max.ng, speak about the challenges and practical realities of receiving online payments in Nigeria.

The expert panel was constituted by Ope Adeoye, a senior executive at Interswitch Limited; Joyce Kim, Executive Director at the Stellar Development Foundation; and JR Kanu, Associate Director, Payments and Digital Goods at Konga.com.

Among other things, merchants and experts agreed that a big part of bringing more purchase intent online, is educating the end users about online payments. Earning their trust with excellent service delivery, refund policies and best in class dispute resolution were also among the major points raised. Also, merchant input needs to inform the solutions that payment service operators build. Both panels were moderated by Oo Nwoye, founder and CEO of Callbase.

“The Africabeta event held yesterday inspired me in so many ways. Literally telling me 'you're not doing enough'," said Osagie Alonge, Editor in Chief, Pulse.ng.

The event was also an opportunity to experience, first-hand, Access Bank’s award-winning payments product, Pay With Capture which was demonstrated by its CEO, Ife Orioke.
