Administrators of Nigeria polytechnics have been urged to make funds allocated for lecturer training available in order to improve the quality of education offered to students.
Spend Budgeted Funds On Lecturers' Training — ASUP
Polytechnics have been advised to make budgeted funds available for academic staff training in order to ensure continuous development.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Osun Polytechnic, Iree Chapter, Mr Dotun Omisore made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.
Omisore implored polytechnics' management to encourage academic staff in their institutions to upgrade their knowledge, especially as government has made funds available for the same purpose.
"An institution is only as good as the quality of the lecturers it parades at any given time, which is why government approves funds for training in the budget estimates," Omisore said.
"If money has been budgeted for such training, it should be natural for administrators to make such available for those who have the task of imparting knowledge."
The Union boss said in a world of constant technological advancements, it is imperative for teachers to always improve themselves, rather than teach from materials rendered obsolete by new developments
"The fact that polytechnics are meant to drive technological development of the nation makes it imperative for teachers in such institutions to be up to date," he said.
He also advised lecturers to seek self-development.
