24-Year-Old Student Loots Neighbor's House He Was Told To Care For

Trust is a burden, they say.

For 24-Year-Old Isaiah Sonnein, a student, who is not staring a long jail term in the face, the burden of trust proved too much for him to bear.

His neighbour, one Ekon Kpokpogri of No. 4, Missouri st., Maitama, has entrusted the key to his house to Sonnein before travelling to Lagos on April 14 for the Easter festivities.

Sonnein was only supposed to take care of the house in the absence of the owner.

But on returning to Abuja on April 21, Kpokpogri discovered that his house had been looted and abandoned.

He reported the case at Maitama police station on April 29 and the suspect, Sonnein, was arrested and arraigned him in a Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on a one-count charge of theft on Fr

Friday, May 31.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Emmanuel Adikwu, told the court that the accused allegedly stole a laptop, external DVD player, a Playstation, control pad, six wristwatches and a six-loaded car stereo.

Adikwu noted that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Penal Code.

The accused, who pleaded not guilty to the offence, faces faces a maximum sentence of up to four years in prison, or a fine or both if convicted.

The Senior Magistrate Mr. Mr Chukwuemeka Ubari, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000, with one surety, who must be a civil servant residing within the jurisdiction of the court, in like sum.

The case was adjourned to June 16 for hearing.
