You Don’t Get Professorship Just For The Sake Of It’ — BIU VC

Nigerian scientists have been challenged to use their skills in "active research for societal good" especially in the face of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

This much was said by the Vice-Chancellor of the Benson Idahosa University (BIU), Benin, Professor Ernest Izevbigie, who said it was improper to wait on the developed countries when Nigeria has many scientists and professors.

"The world has been in a state of panic over the re-emergence of Ebola Virus. We have a lot of professionals in this country.

"We have many professors in this country in various fields. The essence of this attainment of academic excellence is to do research," Izevbigie.

The VC lamented a situation where people "get professorship as a honour just for the sake of it."

"You have to engage in active research for societal good."

He also rubbished calls for more support from America and other developed nations when a lot could be done from within.

"Some of us have been saying America should do more; the West should do more.

"I have a different approach which is that everybody should do more. We should not look at somebody from outside to solve our problems," he added.

Izevbigie made the remarks while addressing journalists in the build up to the institution's 10th convocation.
